Hiring Announcement

We are proud to announce the hiring of Mrs. Melanie Brown as one of our first grade teachers for the 2010-11 school year. She will join Mrs. Satern in teaching one of the two first grade classes. Melanie has a degree in elementary education from Western Oregon University. She worked as an elementary teacher at Sacred Heart Catholic School in Gervais and then took time off to stay at home and raise her children. Mrs. Brown subsequently home schooled her daughters for a few years – both of whom are now at St. Mary in 4th and 8th grades. Most recently Melanie has been subbing as a teacher in the area and has substituted for us many times this year. We are looking forward to Mrs. Brown joining us full time. Welcome aboard Melanie!

CFCA Sponsorship

Many thanks to the St Mary families that recently signed up to sponsor a child through the Christian Foundation for Children and Aging. Your sponsorship tells your young friend that they matter. They're worth it. They can dream. They can achieve.

Sponsoring a child from another country is a wonderful way for your own children to learn first hand about another culture. A relationship of hope and encouragement is nurtured through prayer and letters. Your child will enjoy receiving personal letters and photos from your sponsored friend and your friend will love to hear from you.

There are over 19,000 children and their families waiting for a sponsor to come into their lives. If your family has not known the joy of one-to-one sponsorship, and you are able to help, please call Carol Tabor at 503-769-2300.

St. Mary School Advisory Council Minutes

Wednesday, April 28, 2010

Attending Members: Rick Schindler, Dana Peters, Tina Quigley, Ken Adams, Gina Keudell, Eric Fery, Patty Sampson and Steve Ripp.

Principal Report:

The Strategic Plan will be reviewed twice a year at the Advisory Council meetings.

Five interviews for the new First grade teacher have been completed. Second interviews are being set up with the finalist the candidates will have to prepare a lesson plan and teach in the first grade class while being observed. The candidates will also meet with a group of parents.

May Crowning/Grandparents day will be Friday, May 7. Last year was the largest turnout since Rick has been here. They are expecting a similar turnout this year.

Rick is currently performing formal teacher observations.

The 7th grade parents have met and will be fundraising to support outdoor school for next year.

Rick has been speaking at Masses at various Vicariate churches and plans to be done by the end of May.

Tuition Assistance requests have increased substantially and less tuition assistance funds available to give this year. A letter will be sent out explaining the situation to families.

K-12 information: a detailed five year business plan will be put together before merger is finalized.

The final proposed budget was reviewed with the board.

The school has been informed that we have to license our Preschool program and after-school care programs with the state because we are now required by law.

Open Discussion:

A lengthy discussion was had on our current dress code guidelines and how loosely it is followed by some families and the varying degrees of enforcement of it by staff. The question was asked on whether we should go to a true uniform. It was felt that this would not be supported by the school families due to the increase in cost. We will be looking at ways to increase support of the dress code and consistency in enforcement.

We have one Immaculate Conception board position opening for next year. This will be a 4 year term. We are seeking nominations.

We have not received information on the final numbers for the St. Mary/Regis Annual Fund this year.

The next meeting is Wednesday, May 26 at 7pm

Tina Quigley will be the prayer leader.

Yearbook Orders

Order forms for our 2009-10 FULL COLOR Yearbook should have come home last week with your youngest child. We've received orders for almost half of our available copies so, if you haven't already, please submit your orders soon to ensure your copy! Thanks to all who already ordered, your copies are reserved and will be available in early June. Yearbooks will be sent home with your children unless you make a request to pick it up in the school office.

—————————————–

Grandparents Day/May Crowning

Our Grandparents Day celebration will begin with a procession from school to church at 8:05. The May court will be at the end of the procession and will process to the grotto before entering the church. Crowning of Mary will occur after communion in church.

Crowning is a symbol of Catholic reverence to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The practice became widespread in the United States prior to the 1960's and usually takes place in May. We honor Mary as the perfect follower of Christ, who consented to God's plan and remained steadfast in her relationship with her Son, all the way to the foot of the cross. The crown reflects Mary's "crown of life" promised in James 1:12 and "crown of glory" from 1 Peter 5:4.

Catholic devotion to Mary also has Biblical roots in John 19:26-27 where Jesus asked His mother to consider his disciple her son and asked his disciple to consider Mary his mother. As part of the communion of saints, we believe Mary hears our requests for prayers, considers all disciples of Christ her children and that she continues to have a close relationship with her Son in heaven. We ask for Mary's prayers for us, and our intentions, and consider her devotion to God the example we try to follow.

Our school celebrates Grandparent's Day on the same day as a way to share our celebration of Mary as our heavenly mother with our families here. We have third generation students whose grandparent's continue to enjoy the celebration they first participated in as students themselves. Parents and grandparents practice of faith has significant impact on our students faith. Anytime we bring faith celebrations together with family it strengthens our entire faith community. We hope to have a church full of parents, grandparents and students!

After mass grandparent's join their grandchildren in their classrooms then assemble at 10:00 for entertainment followed by refreshments and 11:15 dismissal.

—————————————–

Teacher Appreciation

As part of National Teacher Appreciation week parents organized a breakfast, two lunches, snacks and desserts for our St. Mary staff this week. Parents may also wish to have their children write thank you notes to their teachers this week. The parent club recognizes the important role our teachers and school staff have in our children's lives and seek to thank, support and encourage them during their special week!

—————————————–

SCRIP Program Changes

This week marks the beginning of some SCRIP program changes. We will be moving to an order in advance system which will allow us to keep much less inventory on hand and allow Parent Club funds to go more quickly to support the school rather than being used to stock SCRIP inventory.

Look for your Scrip Order Form today!

Today your blank Scrip Order Form will be sent home with your youngest child. All orders submitted by Monday at 8am will be filled on Friday by 8am. Please attach your check (no-cash please) to your order form.

Friday Scrip Distribution

On your order form, please select how you want your filled order to be distributed, either (A) to be picked up at the front office or (B) sent home with your child. Orders greater than $300 will not be sent home with students and will be available for pick up at the front office.

————————————–
